Woman, 70, dies after head-on collision with excavator in West Yarmouth

A woman died after her car crashed head-on into a large mobile excavator in West Yarmouth Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Cathy Flavin, 70, of Yarmouth Port died at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis Thursday as a result of her injuries, Yarmouth police said in a Facebook post Friday morning. An initial investigation shows that some type of medical emergency may have played a factor in the crash, police said.

Officers and firefighters responded to the area of Route 28 and Town Brook Road in West Yarmouth at about 2:47 p.m. Thursday after reports of a head-on car accident, police said.

“Patrol Officer Andrew Coville was first to arrive on scene and observed that a grey Honda CRV [sic] had crossed over from the east bound lane of travel into the west bound lane and collided head on with a large construction vehicle,” Yarmouth police said.

Flavin, the driver of the Honda, was found with critical injuries inside of the heavily damaged car, police said. Firefighters were able to take her out of the car and provide some medical care before she was taken to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Police said several witnesses observed the incident.

“One reported observing the Honda CRV go up onto the curb in the east bound lane of travel near the area of Baker’s Square and side swipe a telephone pole,” police said. “The vehicle then crossed into the west bound lane of travel as they both continued east on Route 28 and nearly collided with several oncoming vehicles.”

That witness called 911 “just seconds” before the head-on collision occurred.

Another witness was apparently directly in front of the construction vehicle that was hit, police said.

“He stated that he saw the Honda CRV coming directly at him at a high rate of speed and he quickly accelerated his vehicle and moved out of the way,” police said. “As he got out of the way, the 2008 Honda CRV collided head on with the 2017 GMC Gradall XL5100 Truck owned by Lawrence Lynch Corp of Falmouth.”

Barnstable police also later responded to the scene and said that the Honda was involved in a non-injury, rear-end collision near Kappy’s Fine Wine & Spirits in Hyannis shortly before the accident in Yarmouth, Yarmouth police said.

The investigation is still ongoing, police said. Further information was not immediately available.
